Alzheimers Fundraiser 2021

Moving Forward For Alzheimer's Research

We are proud to present “Moving Forward for Alzheimer’s Research”, a full day of yoga, meditation, movement and mindfulness classes from sunrise to sunset on September 21st – World Alzheimer’s Day.

100% of all funds given to these classes will go directly to the Alzheimer’s Society of York Region to support research.

Starting at 7am, we will be offering online classes of varying lengths and styles. There is something for everyone – from beginners to those with a regular practice, for those with limited mobility to fitness fanatics! We’ll also present a few wellness breaks of deep breathing, meditation, relaxation and informative talks.

It’s a great day to try out a new class and meet new teachers.

Do something nice for yourself, and support a cause with personal significance to many of us.

Donate to the Alzheimer’s Society of York Region through our special campaign page, then come back here and sign up for as many classes as you want! (Our suggested minimum donation is $40 – this is a fundraiser – but of course, please pay what you can.)

Remember, 100% of your donation will go directly to Alzheimer’s research.

Please send the link to a friend or two (or ten!) and join us on September 21, sunrise to sunset, and donate what you can to help us advance Alzheimer’s research and eradicate this terrible disease.

We all want peace of mind, together we can help eradicate Alzheimer’s.

Donate today and we’ll see you in class on September 21st!

Class Schedule

Instructor:   Cheryl Ward

Yoga and meditation have been a part of my life for more years than I care to admit!  30 and counting!! And I’ve had the great pleasure of teaching for more than 15 of those years.  The best is yet to come!
I’m here today because my parents, Lois and Bill are not. Alzheimer’s robbed all of us who loved them of their golden years.

Instructor:   Lorraine Li

(Experienced Yogis Please)

Poses are sequenced in a way to slowly open your body with emphasis on moving with breath (pranayama).  The student progresses through many postures; seated, standing, energetic flows finishing with a restorative posture.

I discovered yoga in my late thirties. I am forever grateful for the incredible journey, and life lessons it has taught me.
We need to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and that is why I’m here today.

With the intention of feeling great, clearing sluggish energy in the body and mind, this “Chakras Vibe” Yoga class will help to balance, rejuvenate and energize!

(For those who prefer “less is more”)

Chair yoga is great for those with reduced mobility, or for people coming off an injury, but is ALSO wonderful for anyone to learn, as it can be practiced at your desk!  Please make sure you’re in a sturdy chair; it must have no wheels and no arms.

Teaching yoga has become my passion, plus it’s just plain fun! My pledge has become “Mo Yoga, Less Stress”.
A close friend of mine is suffering with early onset Alzheimer’s, and I want to do everything I can to help find a cure so nobody else has to suffer like that.

Hatha Yoga is most commonly practised for mental and physical health. Hatha yoga uses bodily postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana) with the goal of bringing about a sound, healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind.

In these sessions, I drop some knowledge about what muscles contribute to lower back and knee pain and take you through some key stretches that can help alleviate pain.

I have been teaching yoga for 11 years.  I am particularly passionate about how the body moves anatomically, and helping people prevent pain.
I am volunteering because: it’s a great cause and Cheryl is an important person in my life. Alzheimer’s sucks! It takes family and friends away from us before their time.

It’s a form of guided meditation, a conscious relaxation practice that induces a complete state of physical, mental, & emotional relaxation.  A 20 minute Yoga Nidra (or Yogic Sleep) session is said to be the equivalent of about a 2 hour nap.

A passive practice, Yin Yoga involves a variety of poses held for up to 3 to 5 minutes accessing deeper layers of fascia.  It is an ideal practice for beginners, or those who want to awaken dormant energy in your body and recharge your practice.

For almost a decade I’ve been guiding diverse populations, from the elderly and chronically ill, to young children, families and pre/post natal moms.
Because of the profound connection between mind, body and sprit, my goal today is to empower people at all stages of life, with tools to help foster health and well-being.

Moving through a sequence of postures while synchronizing your breath with your movement, the benefits will include building internal heat, increased stamina, strength, and flexibility, as well as stress reduction.
